British Airways is all set to launch a new direct flight service between London and Colombo. To mark the launch of the service, the company has also introduced a special menu that introduces passengers to the unique flavors of Sri Lankan and South Indian cuisine.
It has been announced that the direct flight service from London Gatwick Airport to Colombo will start on 23 October 2026. The service is expected to bring new travel opportunities for Sri Lankans living in the UK, tourists and foreigners wishing to visit Sri Lanka.
In particular, Sri Lankans living in Britain for long periods of time travel back home to have a food experience that reminds them of their traditional cuisine.
British Airways has teamed up with London’s famous Sri Lankan and South Indian restaurant Hoppers to prepare this special menu. The dishes have been chosen to reflect traditional Sri Lankan cuisine and South Indian food culture.
Sri Lankan cuisine featured in British Airways’ special menu
It has been announced that from October 23, passengers traveling in British Airways’ Club World Business Class will be able to taste these special dishes. Emphasis is placed on Sri Lankan spices, traditional cooking methods and unique flavors in the preparation of the dishes.
First in this list is curd vada. Served with curd, tamarind and coriander chutney, this dish is one of the popular snacks in South Indian food culture. Its taste and unique serving method can be enjoyed during flight.
Next up is Hopper’s Restaurant’s signature dish, the Galupol Chicken. This chicken dish is served with lemon curd and beetroot curry. The dish is designed to reflect the spices and flavors used in Sri Lankan cuisine.
Also, fried cod fish cooked in banana leaves is also included in the special food list. Marinated in tomato and chilli paste, this fish dish is served with coconut milk rice and spicy pineapple fruit curry. The use of banana leaves, one of Sri Lanka’s traditional cooking methods, adds to the uniqueness of this dish.
An attempt has been made to showcase the taste of Sri Lanka in desserts as well. Added to this list is Vattalapam Bread Pudding, a Sri Lankan twist on traditional British bread pudding. Combining the taste of the popular Sri Lankan vatalappa with the preparation of a British dessert, this venture introduces the food cultures of both countries in one experience.
Along with this, a special liquor called ‘Ceylon Pearl’ will also be served in the flight’s bars and during the journey, according to the news.
However, it has been announced that this special menu will be introduced for Club World Business Class passengers. Therefore, it cannot be assumed that all classes of passengers will be served the same meals.
Opportunities that direct air service could bring to Sri Lankan tourism
A direct London-Colombo flight could prove to be significant for Sri Lanka’s tourism industry beyond the culinary experience. Tourists coming to Sri Lanka from the UK can make travel plans even more convenient with the availability of direct flight connections.
In particular, this service will be an additional option for those who wish to visit Sri Lanka’s beaches, historical sites, hills, tea plantations and wildlife tourism destinations.
Hotels, restaurants, tour guides, vehicle service providers and local businesses may also benefit if tourist arrivals increase. However, the actual impact on airlines depends on fares, seat availability and ongoing passenger demand.
One of the main points that can be expected in relation to this news is that direct air service can reduce travel time and hassles of layovers. Another important aspect is whether the airfares are affordable for the traveler’s budget. These are general expectations and not a collection of opinions expressed by specific readers.
The service has the potential to facilitate repatriation for Sri Lankans living in the UK. At the same time, introducing Sri Lanka’s traditional cuisine to international travelers can help strengthen the country’s food culture and tourism identity.
British Airways’ new London – Colombo direct flight and the accompanying special dining menu are an attempt to provide a new experience for passengers. It remains to be seen how this initiative contributes to the growth of tourism in the long run and the introduction of Sri Lankan food culture to the world.
