Another group of Buddhist monks criticized the protest in favor of Gnanasara Thera

Another group of monks has come forward with strong criticism against the protest being led by some Buddhist monks to demand the release of General Secretary Kalakotathe Gnanasara Thera, who is serving a prison sentence in Sri Lanka. The issue has now sparked debate in religious and political circles.

The monks, speaking at a special press conference, alleged that the actions taken in favor of Gnanasara Thera were being used for political purposes. They also stressed the need to respect the court’s verdict.

Buddhist monks and supporters marched from Kandy to Colombo demanding the release of Gnanasara Thera and protested in front of the President’s Secretariat. While various opinions have emerged for and against these measures, differences of opinion are also seen among monks on how to approach the issue.

Critiques of legal punishment and political intervention

Kalgamue Nandaloka Thera, the author of Medirigiriya Ashokarama Privena commented that failed political parties are trying to achieve their political objectives by using Gnanasara Thera as a tool.

He said that these actions are in contempt of court and may harm the dignity of the Buddhist charter. He also pointed out that Gnanasara Thera could be released after the completion of the legally determined sentence.

He also expressed concern that the saffron dress was being used for political purposes. He warned that if such activities continue, there may be problems in the future for Buddhist monks to express their opinions freely.

Meanwhile, Ulpathelagama Sumangala Thera of Polonnaruwa District National Monk Front has also mentioned that these actions may pose a threat to national unity. His point is that the public should approach the use of religious symbols for political purposes with caution.

These criticisms are not only centered on Gnanasara Thera’s demand for release. They also raise broader questions such as respecting court judgments, protecting the dignity of religious institutions and avoiding the use of religious sentiments for political purposes.

Actions of the President and questions raised by the public

Polonnaruwa District National Monk Front President Perupalle Sukadhasoma Thera has emphasized the need to resolve the issue within the existing legal framework. He also said that instead of looking for unnecessary solutions, we should act with patience.

He also mentioned that the President has taken steps to resolve the issue in an appropriate manner at the earliest by discussing with the registrars of various faculties of the Maha Sangh.

On the other hand, the monks, who are protesting for the release of Gnanasara Thera, are insisting that the issue should be resolved by getting the President’s amnesty. Thus, the debate regarding legal procedures and the power to grant amnesty has intensified.

Important questions that may arise among the public regarding this incident are how respect for the court order will be ensured, under what circumstances the president’s amnesty power can be exercised, and how to maintain a balance between the demands of religious leaders and the legal process.

There may be various opinions on such matters on social media. However, unless specific reader opinions or polls are confirmed, they cannot be taken as the public consensus. The main difference of opinion expressed in the current message is that some monks view the agitation in favor of Gnanasara Thera as politically motivated, while others insist on his release.

Finally, the resolution of this issue has to do with legal procedures, dialogue with religious leaders, and transparency about political interventions. A responsible approach is necessary to protect the law of the land, social cohesion and the dignity of religious institutions so that differences do not escalate further.
